In particular, the strain <em>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/em> CRL1505 has demonstrated an important capacity to keep RTIs at bay.  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:80px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clinical evidence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 298 pre-school children (2-5 years old) that consumed either yogurt containing CRL1505 (&gt;10E8 cfu\/day) or a placebo yogurt 5 days\/week for 6 months showed [1]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Lower use of antibiotics<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><strong>A significantly reduced number of infections<\/strong> in children consuming the probiotic-containing yogurt. In particular, it lowered the incidence of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>upper respiratory tract infection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pharyngitis and tonsillitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>acute diarrhea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In vivo, preclinical evidence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CRL1505 led to an earlier immune response<\/strong> and reduced lung damage when nasal challenges with different types of virus were performed [2-3].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRL1505 heightened <strong>infection resistance<\/strong> to the airway pathogen <strong><em>Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/em><\/strong> serotype 14, mice models. [4-5]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heat-inactivated CRL1505 when administered intranasally<\/strong> has similar benefits to those observed when the live probiotic is administered [6].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mechanisms of action<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The mechanisms of action of <strong>CRL1505<\/strong> have been unveiled in a series of in vivo models, and include increased basal levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-y) in the host, a key activator of the innate and adaptive immune system, and of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10 (IL-10) [4].
