What is stated in the European Commission Regulation<\/strong> authorising use of \u201cLactobacillus acidophilus (CECT 4529)<\/strong>\u201d as a feed additive for cats<\/strong> and dogs<\/strong>? What are the benefits<\/strong> for the health of animals? In this article, we will explore them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 17 October 2018, the European Commission authorised Centro Sperimentale del Latte<\/strong> (a company of the Sacco System group) to use Lactobacillus acidophilus (CECT 4529)<\/strong> as a probiotic feed additive for cats and dogs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorisation<\/strong>, which is available to read in full here<\/u><\/a>, is based on two previous authorisations issued by the European Commission<\/strong> for use of the preparation of Lactobacillus acidophilus (CECT 4529) as a feed additive for laying hens<\/strong> (Implementing Regulation EU 2015\/38) and chickens for fattening<\/strong> (Implementing Regulation EU 2017\/2275).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 19 April 2018, the European Food Safety Authority<\/strong> issued an opinion concluding that \u201cunder the proposed conditions of use, the preparation of <\/em>Lactobacillus acidophilus (CECT 4529)<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong> does not have an adverse effect on animal health, human health and the environment. The additive has the potential to <\/em>improve the stool consistency of cats and dogs<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
