For instance, <em>Limosilactobacillus reuteri<\/em> (basonym \u201c<em>Lactobacillus reuteri<\/em>\u201d) LR 92 has demonstrated to positively improve infant colic in the first months of life. <br\/> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is infant colic?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Infant colic<\/strong> is a condition affecting about 20% infants younger than 3 months old, and is often described as \u201cexcessive crying\u201d. The aetiology is unclear but likely related to <strong>psychological<\/strong> and <strong>physiological causes<\/strong>.<br\/>In children, colic leads to sleeping problems and it can also cause allergies, migraine, attention deficit and hyperactivity as long-term effects.<br\/>Moreover, infant colic may also cause sleeping disorders and depression in parents due to the continuous crying and sleepless nights [1-2]. <br\/> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Probiotic LR 92 and babies health: clinical evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>randomized<\/strong>, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial <strong>was conducted on 145 women<\/strong> (18-49 years old) that consumed capsules of LR 92 (108 CFU\/day) or a placebo during the last 4 weeks pregnancy [3]. <strong>The babies were then monitored for 4-5 months<\/strong> and: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Babies from mothers who received placebo were <strong>2.36 times more likely to have colic<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The frequency and severity of colic were <strong>significantly lower<\/strong> in the intervention group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LR 92 intake appeared to be especially <strong>beneficial for babies born by C- section<\/strong><br\/> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proposed mechanisms of action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although a full understanding of how perinatal <strong>administration of probiotics<\/strong> improves <strong>infant colic<\/strong> is still lacking, <strong>several mechanisms<\/strong> have been identified [4-8]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>increase levels of <strong>anti-inflammatory mediators<\/strong> such as IL-10 and TGF-\u03b2 in breast milk, which in turn stimulate the gut development and IgA secretion, control inflammation and improve gastrointestinal function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>improve gut barrier function<\/strong> by stabilizing tight junctions and mucin production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>promote the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter, and influences <strong>behaviour<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>modulate <strong>gut microbiota<\/strong> development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">___________________________________________________  <br\/><br\/>1.
